(относительное придаточное предложение) является частью
сложного предложения. Оно сообщает нам кого или что
(или какие группы людей/вещей) имеет в виду говорящий:

(who lived next door
tells us which man)

People who
live in the country...
(who
live in the country tells
us what
kind of people)
Who
в относительном придаточном предложении употребляется,
когда мы говорим о людях. Мы используем
who
вместо he/she/they:
the man
- he
lived next door - was a sailor

The
man who
lived next door
was a sailor.
|
we know
a lot of people - they
live in Moscow
|
We
know a lot of people
who live in Moscow.

Также возможно использовать
that
вместо who:

употребляться когда

Когда речь идет о неодушевленных предметах, то
в относительном придаточном предложении употребляется
that
(а не who).
That
употребляется здесь
вместо it/they:
where
are the eggs? -they
were in
the fridge
Where
are the eggs that
were in the fridge?

Which
также может употребляться, когда речь идет
о неодушевленных предметах (но не о людях):

более употребительно, чем which.
Но иногда только which
должен употребляться.

употребляются вместо he/she/they/it:

(а не `... who he lived...')
